Almost all of Iraq's water supply comes from two rivers: the Tigris and Euphrates. The country depends on them for drinking water, irrigation, and electricity generation. But Iraq does not control the flow of either river. Both begin in Turkey. Iraq relies on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which originate in southeastern Turkey, for nearly all of its water.
In rural Iraq, water was of poor quality, highly polluted, and untreated. In the country as a whole, only a small percentage of domestic water supplies were treated by chlorination and sedimentation. The majority of well and waterhole sources were grossly polluted and contaminated.
Iraq's drinking water quality is mixed and often poor. In 2004, 15673 drinking water samples in 15 governorates were tested with regard to water quality. 1010 samples were found to be polluted (6.4%).
Environmental issues include:
• Government water control projects have drained most of the inhabited marsh areas east of An Nasiriyah by drying up or diverting the feeder streams and rivers; a once sizable population of Marsh Arabs, who inhabited these areas for thousands of years, has been displaced; furthermore, the destruction of the natural habitat poses serious threats to the area's wildlife populations;
• Inadequate supplies of potable water;
• Development of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers system contingent upon agreements with upstream riparian Turkey;
• Air and water pollution;
• Soil degradation (salination) and erosion; and,
• Desertification
